BVU Family Spotlight: The Rock/Kim Family

August 2026 - Interviewed Emily (Kim) Rock '19

Who in your family attended BVU?

Elizabeth (Kim) Dill '17, Emily (Kim) Rock '19, Lincoln Rock '20, and Joseph Rock '20.

Elizabeth earned a double major in Biology and Spanish. Emily earned a degree in Biomedical Sciences and played on the women's golf team, overlapping with Elizabeth. Lincoln earned a double major in Business and Corporate Wellness and played basketball. Joe earned a double major in Business and Spanish and played baseball. All four were also involved in campus ministry through Impact and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes).

What originally drew your family member(s) to BVU?

Given how close Emily is with her sister Elizabeth, watching the opportunities Elizabeth pursued at BVU — from her professors to her spot on the golf team to her travel experiences — made it clear BVU was the right place for Emily too. It was a similar story for Lincoln and Joe: Joe started at BVU in 2016, and Lincoln followed a year later in 2017, drawn by the same kind of firsthand look at what his brother was experiencing. Between the four of them, BVU offered a place to compete athletically, grow in faith through Impact and FCA, and be known personally by professors and coaches alike.

Is there a BVU memory, tradition, or moment your family still talks about today?

Storm Lake's setting and its community left a lasting mark on the family. They still talk about walking along the lake, kayaking, and playing rounds of lawn golf on campus — along with the unique, multicultural community that surrounds it. Lincoln spent a summer volunteering with The Bridge of Storm Lake, a youth outreach nonprofit, and the family shares countless memories at local spots like La Juanita's and Lakeshore Pho. Being just 25 minutes from the Rock family farm meant frequent trips out for ATV rides through the pasture and home-cooked meals — a small-town backdrop that became part of the BVU experience itself.

Where are they now?

The four have gone on to build distinct careers and lives. Elizabeth is completing her ENT residency and preparing to begin a pediatric ENT fellowship; she's married to Joe Dill, and the two live in the Twin Cities. Emily recently completed her family medicine residency. She and Lincoln married in 2020, shortly after Lincoln's graduation, and Lincoln now works as a Financial Planner and Vice President of the Minneapolis office for 49 Financial. Joseph is married to Joselyn and serves as a pastor at Summit Church in Alta, Iowa.

What does BVU mean to your family?

"BVU gave four of us four very different callings — medicine, ministry, and financial planning — but the same foundation of faith, community, and hard work to build them on."
